Marketplace, directory, GPO or direct supply partner: what kind of sourcing platform are you actually signing up for

As of 26 September 2026, "sourcing platform" covers four kinds of business: a direct supply partner, a multi-pharmacy marketplace, a group purchasing or buying network, and a directory or quote engine. In Clinic Partner Guide's index, the first two describe an ordering system, the buying network negotiates terms, and a directory or quote engine ends at an introduction to a pharmacy.

Four names for four different businesses

As of 26 September 2026, "sourcing platform" covers four kinds of business: a direct supply partner, a multi-pharmacy marketplace, a group purchasing or buying network, and a directory or quote engine. In our index, the first two describe an ordering system, the buying network negotiates terms, and a directory or quote engine ends at an introduction to a pharmacy.

Ask other clinic owners whether anyone has used a particular supplier, and the useful answer depends on which of the four it is. A directory cannot ship your order late, because it never takes one. A marketplace can take your order and route it to a pharmacy the platform selects.

Clinic Partner Guide'sCompounded Sourcing Platform IndexSource 1compares 12 platforms on 7 criteria read from their own public pages, scored 31 August 2026. Its category field sorts them like this: direct supply partner — Avanta Pharma Group (1); multi-pharmacy marketplace — AutoPilotRx, Fizy Health, VitaRelay, Ironsail Pharma / ImpetusOne, CLR RX (5); group purchasing or buying network — The Banyan Network (1); directory or quote engine — Peptide Association Pharmacy Directory, Find My Chemist, Find My Compounder, APC / A4PC Pharmacy Locator and CompoundingFinder (5).Source 2

Two more are listed but not scored, and sit in no count here: OnlyScripts, whose pages returned an error on every attempt on 29 August 2026, and Pharm503, which the index records as pre-launch.Source 2

What each publishes, not a verdict on service. Each description below is our record of the platform's own public pages, scored 31 August 2026.Source 2

Direct supply partner: what it is, one example

Our methodology defines a direct supply partner as"A supplier a clinic contracts with directly"Source 3.

The index holds one: Avanta Pharma Group, the company Clinic Partner Guide has a commercial affiliation with (see the disclosure above).Source 2Our record describes its "Own secure online provider portal for orders and reorders".Source 2

"Direct" has a second meaning: buying straight from a 503A pharmacy, with no platform in between. The index compares platforms, not pharmacies, so that model is covered inbuying direct from a 503A pharmacy vs a sourcing partnerSource 4. In that page's words, "buying direct means negotiating each pharmacy yourself, and a partner means one relationship negotiated once."Source 4

Multi-pharmacy marketplace: what it is, how ordering works, named examples

The methodology's definition: "A platform that routes a prescription to one of several pharmacies. The platform owns the software and the relationship; the filling pharmacy can vary by order."Source 35 of the 12 are marketplaces: AutoPilotRx, Fizy Health, VitaRelay, Ironsail Pharma / ImpetusOne and CLR RX.Source 2

Ordering is what the model is built for. All 5 score 4 or 5 of 5 on ordering workflow, scored 31 August 2026.Source 2Our record notes AutoPilotRx's "single portal to compare and send prescriptions, with API access", Fizy Health's "one cart and one checkout across pharmacies" and VitaRelay's "separate clinic and rep portals".Source 2

The trade-off is who fills the order. AutoPilotRx's record says "the filling pharmacy varies by order", and Fizy Health's says "the filling pharmacy is selected by the platform".Source 2For a clinic, that moves the license and document checks from the platform to whichever pharmacy fills each order.

Pricing differs inside the model. Fizy Health's record reads: "Pass-through is the pharmacy price rather than a per-clinic negotiated rate." AutoPilotRx states pricing is "comparable in-portal", and the records for VitaRelay, Ironsail Pharma / ImpetusOne and CLR RX read "No pricing is published" (scored 31 August 2026).Source 2Seewhich platforms publish clinic pricingSource 5.

Group purchasing or buying network: what it negotiates and what it does not do

In retail pharmacy, a buying group works through "sourcing agreements negotiated on behalf of its members", as a February 2025 explainer for independent pharmacies puts it.Source 7The model is about terms.

The index holds one buying network, The Banyan Network.Source 2Its record states "negotiated per-clinic rates, net-30 terms and zero membership fees", then: "The rates themselves are not published."Source 2On ordering: "A group purchasing network rather than an ordering system. Entry is a call request and no portal is described."Source 2

Who ships, then? Our record notes that The Banyan Network states "direct-to-clinic supply", and that "the fill is by network pharmacies".Source 2The network arranges the terms and a pharmacy in its network fills the order, so ask which pharmacy, and get the rate sheet in writing.

Directory or quote engine: discovery only, four named examples

A directory lists pharmacies. The index holds 4, with different category labels: the Peptide Association Pharmacy Directory, Find My Chemist (public), Find My Compounder (consumer) and the APC / A4PC Pharmacy Locator (association).Source 2

All 4 score 1 of 5 on ordering workflow and 1 on direct accountability, scored 31 August 2026.Source 2The records read "No ordering function." (Peptide Association), "there is no ordering function" (Find My Chemist), "No quote or ordering function." (Find My Compounder) and "No comparison or ordering functionality." (APC / A4PC).Source 2Find My Chemist's record sums up the model: "you search and connect directly".Source 2

A quote engine goes one step further. CompoundingFinder, the one quote engine in the index, lets a clinic "Submit a medication once and receive quotes", and then "The service ends at introduction; the clinic then deals with the pharmacy directly."Source 2Its record adds that "it is not a reorder workflow".Source 2

For both, every due-diligence question goes to the pharmacy you choose.

Why this matters before your first order

Ordering workflow and direct accountability carry 20% of each score apiece, according to ourpublished methodologySource 3. They measure what the category decides: whether you can order on the platform, and where responsibility for the order sits.Source 2

That is why the 4 directories sit between 2.29 and 2.56 overall: they score 1 on two criteria that carry 40% of the weight between them.Source 2The low score records that a directory is not built to take an order. It says nothing about the pharmacies it lists. What each publishes, not a verdict on service.

The category also tells you where your checks go: at a marketplace, check the pharmacy that fills each order; at a buying network, check the rate sheet and the network pharmacy; at a directory or quote engine, check the pharmacy you choose; with a direct supply partner, check the supplier and the pharmacy it works with.

This comparison is about business models, not about which medications a clinic may order. Regulatory context, for clinics whose orders include compounded GLP-1s: FDA's shortage listings for tirzepatide (December 2024) and semaglutide (February 2025) have ended, and FDA has since acted against marketing of compounded GLP-1s; what a 503A pharmacy may compound is patient-specific and varies by state. Source: fda.gov, "FDA clarifies policies for compounders as national GLP-1 supply begins to stabilize", read 2026-09-26.Source 8

A five-question test to identify which one you are looking at

  • Put these to the platform's own pages before you put them to a salesperson. The answers below are our record for each kind, scored 31 August 2026.Source 2
  • 1. Can I place an order here?Directory or quote engine: no — the directories record no ordering function; the quote engine returns quotes, then steps out. Multi-pharmacy marketplace: yes, through the platform's portal. Buying network: not as described — entry is a call request and "no portal is described".Source 2
  • 2. Who fills the order?Directory or quote engine: the pharmacy you choose and contact. Marketplace: a pharmacy in the network, which can vary by order. Buying network: network pharmacies.Source 2
  • 3. Who sets my price?Directory or quote engine: the pharmacy; some directories show price information they collect. Marketplace: it varies — at one, the pharmacy price passes through; three publish none. Buying network: a negotiated per-clinic rate, not published.Source 2
  • 4. What do I sign up for?Directory or quote engine: nothing — all 5 need no account. Marketplace: self-serve registration at some, a demo request at others. Buying network: a call request, with zero membership fees stated.Source 2
  • 5. Who do I deal with after the order?Directory or quote engine: the pharmacy, directly. Marketplace: the platform, with a network pharmacy behind it. Buying network: the network and its pharmacies.Source 2
  • If the answers are one supplier, its own portal and a contract with that supplier, you are looking at a direct supply partner in the methodology's sense, or at a pharmacy selling direct.Source 3

Questions clinics ask

What is the difference between a compounding pharmacy marketplace and a directory?

A marketplace takes your order through its portal and routes it to one of several pharmacies. A directory lists pharmacies and stops there. In Clinic Partner Guide's index (scored 31 August 2026), all 5 marketplaces score 4 or 5 of 5 on ordering workflow and all 4 directories score 1.Source 2

Does a GPO ship medication to my clinic?

The network negotiates terms, and a pharmacy in its network fills the order. The one buying network in Clinic Partner Guide's index, The Banyan Network, states "direct-to-clinic supply" and "negotiated per-clinic rates", and our record notes "the fill is by network pharmacies" (scored 31 August 2026).Source 2

Is a pharmacy locator the same as a sourcing platform?

Not in the ordering sense. A locator helps you find a pharmacy and takes no order. The APC / A4PC Pharmacy Locator's record reads "An association locator. No comparison or ordering functionality." (scored 31 August 2026).Source 2After that, you deal with the pharmacy you pick.

How many kinds of compounded-medication sourcing platform are there?

Four kinds of business, in Clinic Partner Guide's reading of its index: direct supply partner, multi-pharmacy marketplace, buying network, and directory or quote engine. The 12 platforms scored on 31 August 2026 split 1, 5, 1 and 5, the last being 4 directories and 1 quote engine.Source 2

Does Clinic Partner Guide get paid by any platform named in this article?

What each 503A pharmacy partner publishes about pricing

There is no standard 503A compounding pharmacy price for clinics, and the reason is disclosure rather than variation alone: of the 12 sourcing platforms in this index, one publishes actual clinic rates. The rest either describe how pricing works without saying what it costs, or publish nothing about price and quote only after a call. Read as at 2026-08-31.
